SYNOPSIS

On November 25, 2008, the 3rd Beijing Independent Film Forum screened "Comrade Zhi" at the Songzhuang Art Museum. The documentary was supported by the Ford Foundation and the Li Xianting Film Fund, and Cui Zien served as the producer and director, interviewing more than 30 mainland gay activists to review the development of gay issues in the past 30 years.

At two o'clock in the afternoon, the screening started on time. The Songzhuang Art Museum was full, the lights went out, and the screen was the color of the rainbow. "From dark black to light gray", "from green space to grassroots", "from knowledge to wisdom", "from paper to light", "from inside the classroom to outside the classroom", "from the body to yourself", "from disguise to ease", "from shadow to fruit", "from slow to fast", "Comrade Zhi" is divided into eight paragraphs, sorting out a clear context for the development of China's gay movement.

At the beginning of the film, Qin Shide, who is in his 70s, talks about his experience of being accused of being a "hooligan", and at the end of the film, Luo Nan, a "fan girl" born in the 80s, reads out his classmates' support for the legalization of same-sex marriage, which makes people feel the changes of time. Law, academics, film, literature, media...... It includes many aspects of homosexuality. Li Yinhe, Pan Suiming, Shitou, Zhang Beichuan, Zhang Yuan, Xu Gehui...... Academic views and historical events are told from people from all walks of life. There are also reviews of TV program footage, as well as real records of historical footage. In particular, three gay film festivals and one gay cultural festival have become an unforgettable page in history. At the end of the film screening, the lights came on, and Cui Zien, who was standing on the stage, couldn't help but choke up: "I haven't been so excited for a long time. I originally wanted to make this forum very academic and serious." Many people in the audience were already in tears. The interviewees in the film include artist Shitou, Fudan University teacher Gao Yanning, University of Political Science and Law teacher Guo Xiaofei, and "Comrades are also mortal" program director Wei Jiangang...... All came to the scene and were invited to the stage to give their speeches. Liu Jie, a teacher from Communication University of China, said: "Such a film can help us better understand the lives of gay people and resonate with them." Yang Guang of the Gay Cultural Activity Center asked when the next queer film festival would be held. Bai Yongbing, who speaks the same language in Beijing, expressed his desire to watch gay films. Subsequently, the audience's questions expanded to their views on gay films. Cui Zien also answered one by one. Zhu Rikun is the organizer of this film forum, and because of the film, he participated in the organization of gay film festivals and cultural festivals. He said that he was honored to witness this period of history.

After the screening, a small cocktail party was held in the café of the phenomenon studio. The excited speech just now turned into a conversation between old and new friends in a relaxed atmosphere. Chinese comrades will usher in one thirty years after another, and our younger generations will see the difficulties and joys we have experienced.

Director Biography

Cui Zien, from Heilongjiang. He is a believer in Catholicism, with the baptismal name Peter, and is a Leo. He holds a master's degree in literature from the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and is a second-level film screenwriter and associate professor at the Beijing Film Academy. Due to the religious influence he received in childhood, many elements of Christian faith are integrated into his works, such as the image of the Madonna holding a child in his novels; the protagonist's chanting on the night of Resurrection; musings on whether Jesus exists on Mars; the use of Psalms, Proverbs, and Song of Solomon to structure sections in the film "Old Testament," as well as scenes where Xiao Bo holds the Bible and calls prostitutes to repent... He attempts to reconcile religion and homosexuality, which are often seen as irreconcilable, through beautification, making a commendable effort.
