SYNOPSIS

When septuagenarian photographer Libuše Jarcovjáková receives an invitation for a long-awaited solo exhibition, she finally has the chance to present her life’s work to the world. Once a penniless woman who fled Prague after the Spring, facing threats, identity turmoil, and exile, she experienced the allure of Tokyo’s fashion world and the fall of the Berlin Wall. Through sound and montage, Klára Tasovská transforms Jarcovjáková’s archives into a sweeping reflection on identity, desire, and the turbulent history of her times.

Director Biography

Klára Tasovská is a Prague-based filmmaker and FAMU graduate whose work explores social reality and women’s perspectives. Her feature debut Fortress (2012, co-directed with Lukáš Kokeš) won Best Czech Documentary at Ji.hlava, and Nothing Like Before (2017) premiered at IDFA’s First Appearance Competition.

Director's Statement

I was drawn to Libuše’s work because it embodies a radical practice of freedom and a constant struggle with the self. Her camera, her body, and her words form a complete universe through which we can see how a woman searches for liberation within history. Built entirely from her photographs and diaries, the film uses rhythm and sound to breathe life into the still images, allowing time and memory to flow anew.
