Curatorial Statement
The Living Archive of Queer Cinema in Chinese Context is a community-driven project of cinematic memory. It focuses on Chinese-language queer films created under conditions of censorship, diaspora, and ongoing social pressure. Many significant works have never entered official systems of preservation; their very existence carries uncertainty. We hope these films can continue to be seen and discussed, rather than quietly disappearing in the gaps of time and institutions.
To preserve is to remain after cancellation.
This Auckland launch places contemporary works and historical films within the same screening space.

These films reflect the current state of Chinese queer filmmaking. They engage with bodies, gender identity, Asian subjectivity, and intimate relationships, while also grappling with the realities in which these expressions take shapes. Through this selection, we may glimpse what audiences in Beijing are watching today, and imagine the social contexts in which emotional resonance takes shape. As films travel between cities, experiences begin to reflect and illuminate one another.

Our Story; New Beijing, New Marriage; Love Is a Book
Our Story and New Beijing, New Marriage document a chapter of queer activist history that has nearly faded from public memory. They preserve traces of collective action and voices once raised in public space, allowing moments that have gradually slipped from dominant narratives to surface again.
Love Is a Book is a work by the late filmmaker Lai Yuqing. With delicacy and clarity, she portrayed queer intimacy, sustaining emotional nuance amid social pressure. Her passing has made these images even more precious, and reminds us that Chinese queer filmmakers and their works remain in a state of profound vulnerability. Creation often entails enduring multiple, intersecting pressures.
In this context, building a Living Archive is not an act of nostalgia, but an ongoing cultural practice. It allows images to leave traces, viewing to become connection, and the names and subjectivities of queer filmmakers to remain present.
